Room by Room Rug Guides: Every Space in Your Home

Choosing the right rug isn't a one-size-fits-all decision. What works in a living room rarely translates directly to a bedroom, and what suits a dining table won't necessarily suit a hallway. Every room in the home comes with its own rules around size, placement, construction and durability, which is why we've built a dedicated set of guides for each space.

Below, you'll find our room-by-room rug guides, covering everything from sizing and placement through to styling and material choice. Each room has its own dedicated hub of articles, which we'll continue adding to over time as new guides are published.

Getting the Basics Right, Before You Measure a Room

Before diving into the specifics of each room, there are a few principles that apply almost universally when sizing and placing a rug.

  • Furniture should relate to the rug - As a general rule, the front legs of major furniture pieces (sofas, chairs, beds) should sit on the rug, rather than floating just off the edge of it.

  • Leave a consistent border of floor - Most rooms look best with an even gap of exposed flooring between the rug and the walls, typically somewhere between 20-40cm depending on the size of the room.

  • Bigger is usually safer than smaller - An undersized rug is one of the most common styling mistakes. When deciding between two sizes, it's almost always better to size up.

  • Shape should suit the layout - Rectangular rugs suit most rectangular rooms and dining tables, while round rugs work well in more circular arrangements or smaller footprints.

These fundamentals give you a starting point, but each room in the home has its own specific sizing logic, which is why we've built a dedicated guide hub for each space.

Living Room Guides

Living room rugs need to be sized to the seating arrangement, not just the room itself. Our Living Room guides cover everything from sizing and placement to construction and styling for this space.

Bedrooms Guides

Bedroom rugs are sized around the bed rather than the room. Our Bedroom guides cover sizing for queen, king and single beds, along with placement and material choice.

Dining Room Guides

Dining room rugs come with one non-negotiable rule: every chair needs to stay on the rug, even when pulled out from the table. Our Dining Room guides cover sizing, clearance and construction for everyday use.

Home Office Guides (coming soon)

Choosing the Right Rug for Every Room

There's no single formula that works for every space in the home, because every room asks something different of its rug. In the Living Room, the priority is anchoring the seating area so the room feels connected rather than scattered. In the Dining Room, practicality takes over, with chair clearance and durability driving the right size and construction. In the Bedroom, the rug is sized around the bed itself, prioritising warmth and a considered frame rather than covering the whole floor. Spaces like the Home Office, Hallway & Entrance and Outdoor & Alfresco areas each bring their own considerations, from durability underfoot to weather exposure.

As we continue publishing new articles across each of these six guide hubs, this page will grow into a complete reference for choosing and styling a rug in every room of the home.
