Hemp vs Jute Rugs: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Choose

Hemp and jute are genuinely similar materials, both plant-based fibres with a natural, organic feel, and in our experience, most customers can't actually tell them apart just by looking. The real difference comes down to construction: our hemp rugs are hand-woven in a braided weave, giving them a firmer, more structured initial feel, while our jute rugs use a plain, non-braided weave, which feels a touch softer from day one.
This guide breaks down what actually distinguishes the two, how each performs over time, and which is the better fit depending on your space. For more natural fibre comparisons, maintenance advice, and material guides, explore our Hemp & Jute Rug Guides.
Why Hemp and Jute Feel Different, Even Though They're Similar Fibres

Hemp and jute are both plant-based fibres, and as raw materials, they're genuinely close in character. What actually creates the difference you feel underfoot isn't the fibre itself, it's how each one is constructed into a rug.
Our hemp rugs are hand-woven using a braided weave, which gives them a firmer, more defined structure right from the start. Our jute rugs use a simpler, non-braided weave, which feels noticeably softer and more relaxed underfoot from day one. If you're comparing the two side by side without knowing which is which, construction, not fibre, is usually what you're actually noticing.
Does Hemp Stay Firm Forever?

No, and this is worth knowing before you buy. Hemp's firmer feel is most noticeable when the rug is new. Over time, with regular use, hemp genuinely softens, the braided structure relaxes and the rug becomes more comfortable underfoot the longer you live with it. It never becomes as soft as jute, but the gap between the two narrows considerably with age.
Jute, by contrast, starts softer and stays relatively consistent over its lifespan, though it's also the more likely of the two to show wear or flatten in genuinely high-traffic areas. Some shedding is also normal for both materials early on, particularly when the rug is new. For more detail on what to expect, see our Do Hemp and Jute Rugs Shed? guide. (coming soon)
Fibre Strength and Durability
Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres used in rugs, and its braided construction adds further structural resilience on top of that. If you want to understand how the fibre is processed and why it holds up so well, see our What Are Hemp Rugs? guide.
Jute is still a durable, genuinely capable fibre in its own right. For a closer look at how it's made, see our What Are Jute Rugs? guide.
If durability is your top priority, hemp is the stronger option. For a deeper breakdown of wear resistance and lifespan across both materials, see our Are Hemp & Jute Rugs Durable? guide.
Appearance and Finish
Both fibres sit within a natural, neutral palette, warm, earthy tones with some fibre variation, and to most eyes, they look genuinely similar at a glance.
Hemp's braided construction gives it a slightly tighter, more structured weave, while jute's plain weave often appears a touch looser and more open. Neither is more "correct," it comes down to whether you prefer a marginally more structured look or a more relaxed one.
Maintenance and Care
Both materials need broadly similar care, regular vacuuming, keeping moisture away where possible, and cleaning spills promptly. Hemp's firmer, braided structure tends to be a little more forgiving of everyday handling, while jute benefits from a slightly gentler touch to keep its softer weave looking its best. For the specifics, see our How to Clean Hemp & Jute Rugs guide.
Choosing Between Hemp and Jute for Your Space
The right choice comes down less to the fibre itself and more to construction, feel, and how the space gets used.
Hemp is the better choice if the space sees regular foot traffic, or if you don't mind a firmer feel underfoot while it softens over the years. Jute is the better choice if a softer feel from day one matters more to you, or the space is genuinely lower traffic.
If you're considering either material for a covered alfresco or semi-outdoor area, see our Can Hemp and Jute Rugs Be Used Outside? guide.

Final Thoughts
Hemp and jute are more alike than most people expect, both genuine, capable natural fibres, with the real difference coming down to construction rather than the fibre itself. Hemp's braided weave gives it a firmer start that softens with time, while jute's plain weave is softer from day one but wears a little faster in busy spaces.
