How to Clean Polyester Rugs

Cleaning a polyester rug comes down to a few simple habits: vacuum regularly with suction only, blot spills immediately rather than rubbing, and avoid high heat and over-saturating the fibres. The one thing worth paying closer attention to is oily spills. Cooking oil, sunscreen, makeup and body oils can bond to polyester more readily than ordinary water-based spills, so they deserve quicker attention.
This guide covers day-to-day care, what to avoid, and the one genuine risk worth knowing about. For a broader overview of the material itself, see our Polyester Rugs Resources and Guides hub.
Day-to-Day Care
A few habits, done consistently, make the biggest difference to how a polyester rug looks over time.
Vacuum regularly using suction only, avoiding a rotating brush bar where possible since it can pull at the fibres more than necessary. Vacuuming little and often is generally more effective than waiting until dirt has worked deeper into the pile. If you've noticed some fibre in the vacuum on a newer polyester rug, that's normal too, it isn't ongoing shedding, it's leftover fibre from manufacturing working its way out. See our Do Polyester Rugs Shed? guide for the full picture.
Blot spills immediately rather than rubbing them, working gently to lift the liquid rather than spreading it further. For most everyday spills, water or a mild detergent is all you need, and there's no reason to soak the rug in the process, just enough moisture to lift the spill. This applies just as much to pet accidents and children's spills as it does to any other everyday mess. For a closer look at how polyester performs specifically with pets and children, see our Are Polyester Rugs Good With Pets and Children? guide.
Most polyester rugs don't need specialised cleaning products. In most cases, clean water and a mild detergent are all that's needed for everyday spills, making polyester one of the easier rug materials to maintain in a busy household.
Why Oily Spills Deserve Quicker Attention

This is genuinely the one thing worth knowing about cleaning polyester specifically. Polyester fibres are naturally attracted to oils (a property known as being oleophilic), meaning oily substances can cling to the fibre more readily than water-based spills.
In practical terms, that means things like cooking oil, sunscreen, greasy food, makeup, and body oils can be a little harder to remove if they're left sitting for too long. Polyester handles water-based spills very well, but an oily spill can bond to the fibre more readily than a typical liquid spill, so it's worth treating those with a bit more urgency.
The fix is simple: treat an oily spill the same way you'd treat any other spill, just faster. Blot immediately, use a mild detergent to help break down the oil, and avoid letting it sit for an extended period.
What to Avoid
High heat is worth avoiding altogether. Steam cleaners and very hot water can both affect the fibre over time, so stick to the cooler, gentler methods covered above.
Soaking the rug during routine spot cleaning is another thing to steer clear of. Dry the rug thoroughly after cleaning. While polyester itself doesn't readily absorb water, moisture left in the pile, backing or underlay can create problems if it isn't allowed to dry properly.
Letting a spill sit untreated for too long is the last habit worth breaking, even a straightforward water-based one. Polyester handles most spills well, but the longer anything sits, oily or not, the harder it becomes to remove cleanly.
Does Density Affect Cleaning?
Not really. Points per square metre matter a great deal for softness and durability, but it doesn't meaningfully change how a polyester rug should be cleaned. A denser, premium construction like our Victoria range gets the same care as a standard-density polyester rug, the habits above apply across the board. For more on how density affects long-term performance, see our Are Polyester Rugs Durable? guide.
Final Thoughts
Polyester is genuinely easy to live with day to day. Vacuum regularly, blot spills as they happen, and give oily spills a little extra attention. Get those habits right, and a quality polyester rug will continue looking its best for years.
