Polyester is a fully synthetic fibre used in rugs for its strong colour clarity, softness, and wide design range, and in our experience, if you put a polyester rug down next to a polypropylene one, most customers wouldn't notice a difference in the fibre itself. What people actually notice is density, how many points per square metre a rug has, not which synthetic fibre it's made from.

How Is Polyester Made Into Rug Fibres?

Polyester fibres begin as a synthetic polymer, which is melted and extruded through fine nozzles to form continuous filaments. Those filaments are then spun into yarn and machine-woven into the finished rug. Every polyester rug we carry is machine-made, built to a specific points-per-square-metre density, essentially, how many individual points of fibre are packed into each square metre of the rug.
How Is Polyester Used in Rugs?
Polyester is used throughout the rug industry for its practicality, colour performance, and affordability relative to natural fibres. It's particularly popular in family homes, rental properties, and any space that sees consistent everyday use, largely because it delivers strong performance without the price tag of a natural fibre or the higher-end synthetic tiers.
Density is really the defining factor in how a polyester rug performs and feels. Standard constructions typically sit around 700,000 to 900,000 points per square metre, while premium, high-point-count collections like our Victoria range reach roughly 2 million points per square metre, noticeably denser and more substantial underfoot than the standard tier.
Can You Actually Tell Polyester Apart From Other Synthetics?
In most cases, no, not by touch alone. If we put a polyester rug down next to a polypropylene rug of similar density, the vast majority of customers, in our experience, wouldn't be able to tell the two fibres apart. What people actually notice is density, not fibre identity, a high-point-count rug simply feels more substantial than a lower-point-count one, regardless of which of the two synthetic fibres it's made from.
PET yarn is an even closer comparison, since it's chemically the exact same polymer as polyester, the real difference there comes down to whether the polymer is virgin or recycled, and whether the rug is machine-made or hand-woven, not the fibre itself.

The decision between polyester, polypropylene, and PET yarn rarely needs to come down to which fibre feels different underfoot, it usually comes down to design, colour, construction, and how dense a construction you're looking for. Where Is Polyester Commonly Used?
Because polyester is practical, easy to maintain, and available in such a wide range of styles, it's commonly used throughout many areas of the home, particularly living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms. It isn't suited to genuine outdoor use, unlike UV-stabilised polypropylene, standard polyester isn't built to handle sun and moisture exposure long-term.
